We are constructing a climate-controlled, special collections room in the basement of the Stewart Library Building. The room is designed to provide conditions that will preserve books and documents. Three things that harm preserved items are temperature, humidity, and sun light. As a well insulated, sealed unit, the room will have an efficient heat pump system to control temperature and humidity. There will be no windows to let in natural light.
We have worked with a preservation specialist from the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Ma, an architect, and the builders to design a facility that will preserve the collection, protecting it from the usual problems found when storing items in a basement.
Moving most of the Stewart books and artifacts, and the Town’s records to this room will free up space in the private library room and in the town office.
I have never seen a cement truck with such a big boom. Wow!
Some different from the days when concrete was hauled around in wheel barrows.
Awesome process !!! Kudos to you all for the thorough research and meticulous planning of this latest project. Uncle Levi must be beaming in gratitude for these efforts………
We think Mr. Stewart would be disappointed that his books have never been used. After more than 100 years it is too late now to allow them to circulate. However, by moving most of them to a second location we can provide the space needed so the public can learn his story and so researchers can access the collection in a fashion that preserves and secures this valuable historical resource.
