Work on the steeple of the Stewart Library Building is coming along nicely.
The new protective blue layer added under the slate is all but covered now as the shingles are back in place. It looks like the vertical flashing on the corners of the octagon shape will be replaced soon.
The eagle on the weather vane has been cleaned and restored to working order. Painting on the wood parts of the steeple will begin soon.
Take a close look at the top of the steeple.
The decorative “fencing” surrounding the top has been removed, sand blasted, repaired, painted, and put back in place. Originally this same railing was installed all around the flat part of the main roof. We do not know when that was removed.
It is nice to see the steeple portion, good-as-new after 118 years, back where it should be.
I never did see that white “fencing” on the top, but I sure do like it. What a beautiful building. Keep up the good work.
So exciting to see this wonderful building being restored to what it once was. My dad would be so pleased! He was so proud of his home town and spent many hours in service of Corinna in this building! Thank you Ken for your hard work to preserve this wonderful treasure that Levi Stewart gave us so many years ago!
The restoration of the “fencing” is the crowning touch to this thoughtful restoration. What a source of pride to all of us who love Corinna ! Ken, you should be named Corinna’s Honored Citizen. Your efforts have brought what seemed an impossible project to a stunningly successful completion.
Thank you for the kind words. I do want to give credit where it is due. There is a committee of about a dozen people working on this project along with the Selectmen and the Town Manger. It is very much a collaborative effort. They all contribute in remarkable ways.
Also, the completion of the clock tower and steeple is just the beginning, “Phase One”. In a couple of weeks the construction of “Phase Two” will begin. Soon I will post an article about what is coming next.
