Steel for the addition

steelcorners56The structural steel for the new addition arrived today. They are wasting no time. The four corners of the addition are already in place. The skeleton of the new structure and the stairway will go up over the next week or so. It will be an interesting process to watch. Updates will be posted here.

This new addition to the Stewart Library Building will house a stairway to the basement, first floor, and second floor. The side facing the St. Albans Road will include a new entrance to the building with a natural ramp walkway for complete accessibility from the back parking lot. The wooden ramp on the other side of the building will no longer be needed.

The three-stop elevator and lobbies will be installed in the existing north stair tower. This picture shows that area as it is today. The stairs have been removed.

shaftThe space is opened up for the elevator shaft. The bottom of the attic floor is visible at the top.

After the elevator is installed the lobby areas will be rebuilt using as much of the original materials as possible. Everything removed in demolition that can be saved will be reused where possible. Original building materials not used now will also be saved for possible use in the future.
